Smith began casting bronzes from the clay in 1984, after a successful career as a decoy carver. His upbringing on the northern California coast and later experiences in the wilds of Montana instilled a love of the natural world.

In 1970, Artist Phil Capen began his art career in Miami, painting boats and coastal scenes. He became interested in Florida birds and started to explore the Everglades National Park. It was his visit to Marsh Harbour in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas that inspired the beginning of his well-known paintings of island life in the Abacos.
